![]() ![]() So we wanted to see whether we could find a solid manual grinder that cost less than our $100 budget pick, was still portable, and was comfortable enough to use as an everyday grinder. But we recognize that many people might have a modest budget or a very small kitchen. In the past, we’ve recommended a hand grinder as an affordable option mainly for travel or camping. You can also add color accents to match your kitchen. ![]() In late 2020, Baratza released an optional single-dose hopper, which lets you use the top lid to measure out beans, streamlining the process. But we’ve found it’s easy enough to just measure the beans before they’re added to the hopper or after they’re ground. The Encore is our only pick (besides the hand grinder) that doesn’t have a timer or an automated way to measure out beans. This grinder should be great for anyone who makes drip coffee or uses a French press, a Chemex, an AeroPress, or pour-over. Although the Encore won’t produce a fine enough grind to satisfy serious espresso enthusiasts, its output is consistent enough to create a serviceable shot. This grinder is also easy to clean and maintain, so it will be an investment you can rely on morning after morning. It’s a time-tested, reliable, straightforward tool that takes up a modest square of counter space. The Baratza Encore grinds coffee more evenly, on a wide range of settings, than any other machine we tested at its price level. ![]()
